artist's statement
Figures, often self-portraits, interact with nature in a surreal way in my work. Skin turns into butterflies, giant-sized hands touch skies made of water, and figures exist in impossible landscapes. These interactions recall feelings from specific moments throughout my life. In many ways, the world I create through my work is my personal Secret Garden — a protected and magical space to reflect on the way I relate to and navigate the world.I often start a piece by asking “how do I feel?” and seeing what images come to me as a response. This manifests in ways that are sometimes playful and sometimes sentimental, but always have a sense of gentleness and love. It explores the question: In what ways do I call out to the world around me, and how does it respond?
